Dans les années 1980, la gestion forestière des autorités fédérales aux États-Unis a été remise en cause dans une controverse qui s’est cristallisée autour de la chouette tachetée nordique. À partir d’une revue critique des arguments écologiques utilisés dans la controverse et des enjeux socio-politiques de cette polémique, cet article met en évidence l’influence réciproque de la science et de la gestion pour produire un indicateur écologique dans un contexte de judiciarisation. Nous montrons comment différentes catégories ont été produites et mobilisées politiquement pour caractériser le problème (indicateur chouette tachetée, puis catégorie bon habitat). Nous mettons en évidence les hypothèses qui ont permis sa mise en nombres et en variables (à travers l’estimation du taux de croissance asymptotique de la population de chouette tachetée). Nous observons une prime à l’indicateur existant – et aux hypothèses existantes - quand (i) le processus de gestion a pris pour acquis les hypothèses/résultats fournis par la sphère académique; et (ii) les résultats académiques remettant en cause ces hypothèses ont été peu – voire pas – pris en compte. Ces dernières réflexions nous amènent à discuter l’intérêt d’une gestion adaptative, complétant ainsi l’approche du chapitre introductif.
