Verso 1955 Sartre ha cominciato a scrivere la sceneggiatura di un film dedicato a una figura marginale del periodo del Terrore durante la Rivoluzione francese : Joseph Le Bon. Gli appunti inediti che conosciamo (una sessantina di fogli conservati a Austin e a Ottawa) non permettono affatto di comprendere perché questo progetto è stato abbandonato. Ma confrontando questi appunti ad altri testi contemporanei - qualche passaggio della Critica délia ragione dialettica e un altro insieme di pagine inedite (il progetto "Uguaglianza e libertà") - si può capire come Sartre abbia avuto il sentimento che gli sviluppi richiesta dalla scrittura di una trama psicologica, che avrebbe permesso di dare al film un qualche spessore, non erano compatibili con la teoria antipsicologica della dialettica storica che Sartre stata elaborando in quel momento.
