Cet article s’intéresse à la critique d’art qui émerge dans les années 1940, principalement au sein de l’espace essayistique des revues comme Amérique française , La Nouvelle Relève et Gants du ciel , lesquelles appartiennent à la « constellation personnaliste » dominant alors le champ culturel. Tandis que l’époque commence à concevoir une distinction entre l’artiste (nourri d’une vision esthétique en littérature, en arts visuels, en théâtre ou en musique) et l’intellectuel (qui pense d’autres sujets et peut intervenir dans la Cité) se met en place, dans les corpus analysés, une poétique de l’apologie de la modernité basée sur trois types de discours communs (l’approche historique, le didactisme et la subjectivité lyrique de type symboliste) et sur des stratégies récurrentes (notamment l’antinomie et l’analogie). L’analyse de l’évolution de ces formes et de ces discours sur l’art au long de la décennie montre en quoi et comment celle-ci mène peu à peu à la rupture de 1948 qui, contrairement à ce que suggère le grand récit de l’histoire littéraire québécoise, ne représente pas uniquement une rupture avec « la tuque et le goupillon », mais aussi avec les alliés naturels, soit les personnalistes qui, au Québec, ont été les premiers à apprivoiser la modernité esthétique.
