Abstract
Entre Bretagne et Maine court une vieille frontière qui a beaucoup évolué au cours des siècles. Grâce à un dossier assez fourni, il est possible de suivre son histoire qui appartient autant à l’histoire des institutions qu’à celle de la société ou des représentations. La frontière est liée à la conception et à la pratique de l’espace. Elle sépara sans doute deux cités gauloises mais avec le Moyen Âge, la diversité et l’imbrication des limites s’imposent, faisant naître une zone de confins générant une société originale, surtout observable dans l’aristocratie et les implantations monastiques. Avec le développement de l’État, elle prend un aspect moderne et guerrier mais elle n’est pas reconnue comme telle par tous, comme la famille de Laval-Vitré qui demeure fidèle aux anciennes conceptions plus conformes à ses intérêts.
