Abstract
An attempt is made to study the frequency distribution characteristics of the heatwave events in Thessaloniki, for the past period of 1960-2003. Those characteristics of the heatwaves are then projected for three future periods up to 2100. The observed hourly values of air temperature and relative humidity obtained at the Meteorological Station of the Department of Meteorology and Climatology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are used, in order to construct the baseline characteristics. The hourly bioclimatic index Summer Simmer Index (SSI) is calculated and it is modified to the SSI΄, which is proven more applicable for the Thessaloniki area. Annual, monthly and hourly distributions of this index are constructed, and maximum frequencies of heatwave events are detected, during the past period, 1960-2003. Moreover, the average values of air temperature and relative humidity, for the month-period May to September, are used for the corresponding three future periods: 2020-2035, 2050-2065 and 2070-2100. These data information are derived through the Canadian model of general circulation of atmosphere, CGCModel2, and incorporate the emissions scenarios SRES A2 and SRES B2. In a similar way, the modified bioclimatic index SSI΄ is calculated, for each emission scenarios, during the future periods. The characteristics of the relative frequency distributions of the SSI΄ index, among the three future scenarios periods (2020-2035, 2050-2065 and 2070-2100) and against the baseline observations (1960-2003), are compared, for each category of SSI΄.
