Abstract
The paper is dedicated to the portraits of the first quarter of the 18th c. representing Peter I and his companions against the background of marine motifs, which are characteristic of the age. The image of water may have various interpretations. The sea background that usually indicates one’s association with seamanship can be interpreted as a symbol of the State and also as a sign of person’s readiness to perform feats of arms. The water element, usually in close connection with heaven and earth, is interpreted as a fundamental part of the Universe. A human being, enclosed in such a “cosmogonical frame” of natural elements, appears as a model of the Universe. In that case, into the centre of the system the Person of the Monarch is placed, and his power is represented as divine.
