Abstract
L’auteure pose son regard sur les pierres tombales de personnages publics inhumés dans la vieille partie du cimetière Saint-Charles à Québec (1855-1967). Tout en considérant l’aspect architectural des monuments funéraires, elle découvre dans leurs inscriptions et leur agencement des caractéristiques marquantes du système de parenté québécois francophone : transmission des prénoms des enfants morts en bas âge au suivant ; filiation indifférenciée qui favorise la proximité dans le même lot des filles mariées avec leurs parents et des gendres avec leurs beaux-pères ; cohabitation dans la mort des deux épouses d’un même homme remarié après veuvage ; voisinage de soeurs et de frères mariés grâce aux rapprochements entre beaux-frères ; prise en charge par le mari du frère célibataire de sa femme ; inclusion dans son lot familial des garçons de sa femme veuve. L’étude révèle la grande place faite aux personnes apparentées par le mariage et la possibilité pour l’individu d’appartenir à plusieurs lignées.
