L’hégémonie, à l’échelle globale ou régionale, est un thème récurrent au sein de la discipline des relations internationales et d’approches d’inspiration gramscienne ou néogramscienne. Ces approches prennent en compte, par delà la puissance économique et militaire, l’existence d’un modèle de gouvernance globale appuyé par des normes qui soutiennent une idée d’universalité et une image d’un ordre mondial, et issu de l’expérience européenne, entre étatisation et colonisation, jusqu’aux expériences hégémoniques, anglaises puis américaines, leurs normes et leurs institutions. Les études néogramsciennes donnent à voir un modèle hégémonique occidental en même temps qu’elles forment un appareil critique de référence pour le comprendre. Cet article élargit ces références à des modèles hégémoniques non occidentaux liés aux théories dites « postoccidentales », qui n’entrent que rarement dans les réflexions contemporaines, en dépit d’une évolution rapide du système international au profit d’acteurs émergents, et en particulier de la Chine. Celle-ci est un sujet d’étude légitime pour les thèmes néogramsciens, entre élargissement de la classe sociale dominante au niveau global (transpacifique) ou modèle contrehégémonique. Au-delà, les discours universels postoccidentaux, notamment chinois, pourraient être comparables au modèle hégémonique issu des réflexions gramsciennes, à travers une épistémé propre à la domination considérée. Enfin, à partir de l’exemple hégémonique, la compatibilité entre les approches gramsciennes et non occidentales – et les critiques sur l’eurocentrisme subliminal ou l’orientalisme « soft » – est examinée afin de comprendre les enjeux de l’émergence d’approches théoriques concurrentes du grand récit centré sur le monde atlantique, dominant dans la discipline des relations internationales.
