Abstract
A week after Hurricane Matthew ripped through Haiti’s southern peninsula, local authorities claim that there have been 372 deaths, although unofficial figures in the media put the number at more than twice this. Roads and bridges were severely damaged by the hurricane, and mobile phone and radio towers were destroyed, effectively cutting off many communities for several days. As rescue workers and state authorities reach the hardest hit villages, a more complete picture of the devastation is expected to emerge.
