Langue globale et « hypercentrale » (de Swaan, 2001), l’anglais est la lingua franca internationale et pourrait devenir la langue seconde commune à tous les locuteurs des autres langues. Selon de Swaan, les anglophones ont peu tendance à apprendre d’autres langues. Le Québec est un endroit particulier où l’anglais est à la fois langue majoritaire du pays et langue minoritaire provinciale. À partir des données d’une enquête réalisée auprès d’un échantillon de deux mille élèves d’écoles québécoises de langue anglaise du niveau secondaire (Landry, Allard et Deveau, 2013b), l’article analyse leurs vécus langagiers en anglais et leurs dispositions envers la langue anglaise en fonction de la concentration territoriale des anglophones et vérifie la validité d’un modèle théorique de l’effet de ces vécus. Il conclut que les mêmes principes sociolinguistiques s’appliquent aux deux minorités de langue officielle, mais que la communauté anglophone constitue une minorité avantagée par le fait qu’elle parle la langue la plus puissante de l’humanité.
