L’ouvrage se présente comme la retranscription d’entretiens menés principalement par l’auteur au Burgenland, dans des localités habitées par des Valaques croates. Il s’agit d’une population démographiquement très peu nombreuse (1400 personnes au milieu du XXe siècle) regroupée dans un espace linguistique et confessionnel homogène, qui a conservé des traits linguistiques particuliers et un ancrage dans le catholicisme.
