Suppressing shrinkage/warpage of PBT injection molded parts with fillers

Abstract
Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) was chosen as the model polymer for studying the method of polymer modification in purpose of suppressing shrinkage and warpage with fillers. With high crystallinity, injection molded PBT products would easily be distorted by anisotropic shrinkage or residual stress. In this article, glass fiber, talcum, calcium carbonate, wollastonite powder were filled into PBT to make composites, and the roles of filler types, filler compositions, and feeding methods for filler incorporation were explored by studying the performance of the resulted composites. The samples were also investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electronic microscopy. It is shown that uniform shrinkage and enhanced mechanical performance can be obtained.
