Abstract
¿Cuáles son las razones que explican el aumento extraordinario de los diagnósticos de depresión y de la prescripción masiva de antidepresivos en Occidente y cada vez más en todo el mundo? ¿Cómo explicar que en los países donde se prescriben y consumen la mayor cantidad de antidepresivos, como en el caso del Canadá, la prevalencia de la depresión no cesa de aumentar? Las explicaciones biológicas, psiquiátricas y epidemiológicas son incapaces de explicar estos dos fenómenos que se afirman cada vez más desde los últimos 30 años con la sola novedad de integrar los trastornos ansiosos a estas dinámicas paradójicas. Este artículo propone resituar la difusión extraordinaria del síndrome depresivo y de la prescripción masiva de antidepresivos en el contexto de las tensiones sociales que, desde nuestro punto de vista, las explican. Ilustramos nuestras hipótesis sociológicas con los resultados de varias investigaciones llevadas a cabo en la ciudad de Montreal.
