Abstract
La création du label « Ville et Pays d’art et d’histoire » en France interroge la dimension communicationnelle du patrimoine dans un contexte de municipalisation des politiques patrimoniales. Ce label manifeste ainsi la montée en puissance du rôle des collectivités locales, illustrant une nouvelle répartition des tâches entre celles-ci et les administrations centrales du ministère de la Culture. Une régie à l’échelle du ministère et de ses services en région se complète d’une opérationnalisation à l’échelle locale grâce à la création systématique d’un service d’animation de l’architecture et du patrimoine. Cette évolution témoigne d’une opérativité symbolique nouvellement accordée au patrimoine, car les territoires administratifs récemment formés ont fréquemment recours à la compétence patrimoniale pour construire l’identité de leur territoire. À l’intérêt national, opérativité symbolique historiquement mise en œuvre par les politiques patrimoniales, s’ajoute alors une seconde opérativité, illustration d’un intérêt local.
