Les deux auteurs proposent, dans cet article, une genèse des études sonores en théâtre dont l’émergence est toute récente, puisqu’elles n’ont pas dix ans. Ils précisent les défis auxquels elles ont été et sont confrontées, les objets qu’elles examinent. Après avoir défini l’auralité théâtrale et avancé certaines hypothèses sur l’« oubli » du son au sein des études théâtrales, les auteurs montrent comment la transformation des représentations (mentales et scientifiques) de l’ouïe et de l’espace aural, principalement depuis l’avènement des technologies de reproduction du son à la fin du XIX e siècle, s’est répercutée sur les scènes, renouvelant radicalement les pratiques scéniques des XX e et XXI e siècles.
