Abstract
Evenement tres connue de la fin de l’Antiquite, le franchissement du Rhin en 406 par les Vandales, Sueves et Alains est generalement decrit par les historiens modernes comme une traversee opportuniste des Transrhenans sur le cours gele du fleuve. Or, aucune source contemporaine de l’evenement ne mentionne le gel du Rhin. Qu’en est-il veritablement de la glaciation du Rhin a l’epoque romaine? Est-il justifie de voir l’utilisation d’un pont de glace dans le franchissement rhenan de 406? Le present article a pour objectifs d’examiner les sources anciennes temoignant, de facon directe ou indirecte, d’un gel du Rhin et d’examiner comment ces sources peuvent fournir des indices sur la frequence du phenomene et sa reapparition periodique au cours des premiers siecles.
