Abstract
Abstract The Ste-Émilie Skillshare is a Montreal-based community “do-it-yourself” (DIY) art space that is run by and for people who identify as trans, two-spirit, queer, indigenous, and/or people of color and allies. This chapter draws on individual interviews and a focus group conducted with Skillshare members under the auspices of an antiauthoritarian feminist research project by the Collectif de Recherche sur l’Autonomie Collective. Several themes related to the Skillshare’s antiauthoritarian and antioppression politics around antiracism and queer liberation are discussed: resource sharing, accessibility, empowerment, and capacity building; shared pleasure in art and activism; mutual support and mental health; interlocking oppressions; safe(r) space; and tension and controversy. This chapter fills a gap in research between intersectionality, critical race, and queer theory on the one hand, and DIY alternative media theory on the other. It challenges the boundaries of artistic citizenship, demanding a rethinking of the use of the term citizenship.
