Los cambios inducidos por la acción humana en los sistemas climáticos del mundo se sitúan directamente en la trayectoria que nos conduce a una catástrofe civilizatoria. Sólo la introducción de cambios fundamentals en la “lógica” de los sistemas políticos y económicos en el futuro próximo harán possible el movimiento hacia una economía sustentable basada en fuentes renovables de energía. Adoptando una perspectiva sistémica basada en la filosofía de la ciencia de Mario Bunge, este artículo trata de mostrar cómo los sistemas sociales claves y sus mecanismos básicos actualmente operantes nos permiten explicar por qué, a pesar del conocimiento sobre el clima que las ciencias naturales han puesto a nuestra disposición, todavía no se están dando respuestas políticas efectivas para afrontar el problema. El análisis identifica estos sistemas políticos, económicos y culturales que desempeñan un papel clave en el cambio climático, especialmente obstruyendo la adopción de políticas progresistas. También identifica los sistemas y mecanismos a través de los cuales el creciente movimiento alternativo frente al cambio climático está preparando las bases para cruzar el umbral hacia una creciente conciencia y voluntad de actuar que tengan el potencial para quebrantar los sistemas políticos y económicos dominantes.
