Écrire pour la jeunesse est une entreprise récente dans l’histoire canadienne-française. L’entreprise trouve sa justification dans un projet nationaliste. En 1921, le périodique L’Oiseau bleu est créé afin de promouvoir des romans-feuilletons dont les protagonistes sont des enfants. Reflétant le projet intellectuel des élites, Les Aventures de Perrine et de Charlot de Marie-Claire Daveluy, premier titre à paraître, remporte auprès du jeune public un succès immédiat qui oriente les futures productions en direction de l’Histoire et des valeurs morales. Ces livraisons périodiques seront rapidement éditées en volumes, marquant l’avènement de l’édition contemporaine de jeunesse. Toutefois, entre 1920 et 1940, la masse « lisante » est tout entière considérée « à éduquer », créant l’amalgame entre littérature « populaire » et « enfantine ». C’est Albert Lévesque qui parvient le mieux à sectoriser cette toute nouvelle niche éditoriale en créant des collections. Et bien que de nombreux concurrents et de plus en plus d’auteurs investissent ce créneau littéraire, Daveluy demeure à part. Elle propose des trames narratives innovantes, basées sur les légendes et le folklore national. Inclassable, l’éphémère collection des « Œuvres de Marie-Claire Daveluy » créée par son éditeur entérine l’existence d’une saga littéraire. Et c’est en offrant deux autres sagas que l’auteure phare de l’entre-deux-guerres conclut sa carrière en direction des enfants chez Granger Frères.
