Abstract
Citizen, not sojourner, is the normative identity for Christian life in this world. Human beings are bearers of the Spirit-breathed image of God. Cultural and social productions—the life that takes place in cities—are historical, particular, and collective ways that human beings embody the Spirit’s gift of life. Human life in this world plays a role in the story of the Spirit that culminates in the everlasting city of the new creation, the New Jerusalem. The world-denying register of Pentecostal rhetoric recognizes that Babylon’s way of life is broken, but the material nature of Pentecostal praxis taps into the deeper pneumatological reality that the life of the city arises from the Spirit. Being people of the Spirit means being people who are in and for the life of the city.
