This study examines whether frequency of understory plant species is positively related to seed size in deciduous forest communities, where seed size is expected to be positively related to recruitment success. We used data from three deciduous forests in Sweden for analyses across species and between phylogenetically independent species pairs. The analysis of phylogenetically independent species pairs was used as a method to reduce confounding factors. In two of three forests seed size was positively associated with frequency, irrespective of comparative method. We interpret the relationship between seed size and frequency as an outcome of three underlying relationships: a trade-off between seed size and seed production, a community-specific relationship between recruitment success and seed size, and a positive effect of establishment ability on frequency. We also found that the fraction of animal-dispersed seeds was higher in the investigated forest communities than in open semi-natural grasslands from the same region. The results indicate a complex of inter-relationships between seed size, dispersal, and frequency patterns.
