An overview of the concepts of selfhood and self-awareness is provided by Thomas to clarify what is meant by these terms, and to argue that many animals are self-aware at both minimal and rich levels. Self-awareness is presented as a capacity that exists on a continuum among individual animals and across different species, rather than being a capacity that only humans possess. The chapter provides an examination of arguments to support the notion that minimal selfhood is a result of evolutionary continuity among species, including humans, and that empirical research can provide indicators of such self-awareness through the study of animal minds, including specific abilities like tool use and communication skills in animals.
