Abstract
Here is a poem by Medbh McGuckian: Apostle of Violence 1 There is an extra gathering of snow over the prisoner on the Roman triumphal arch: his arms are bare, his legs crossed, his lips wind-packed with snow, not twisted in pain, his sixteenth-century eyes are used all the more breaking their snow-lids to the outer morning. Windows higher on the outside than on the inside lead his eyes upwards to tabernacle corners, blind-windows belonging in the ceiling’s world. A blend of morning’s freshest hours blows through his wind-clothes till his right hand seems a brother by his side. The rivers that are the companions of the times of the day reply with the gift of a day in his life in the person of night, a day too heavy for one angel, like an empty throne, at the stair-foot door, open the length of the ice-veiled garden.
