nazione continu a cercare la propria fisionomia, organizzando meglio il sistema dei partiti e superando la polemica linguistica nel 1934, allorch il maltese, insieme con l'inglese, divenne lingua ufficiale. Attraverso gli assidui contatti con esuli italiani, e considerando le condizioni del risorgimento della penisola analoghe alla situazione maltese, il popolo trov l'ispirazione e la motivazione che gli mancavano. Alla base di tutto questo c'era il patrimonio culturale comune. 1 Per molti secoli a Malta si era sviluppata una vasta letteratura in italiano, frutto di intellettuali educati "italianamente" (come si diceva) che seguivano costantemente l'architettura stilistica e la gamma tematica (largamente religiosa, civile e personale) degli autori italiani.
