Abstract
Trois États fédéraux se partagent le continent nord-américain : Canada, États-Unis d’Amérique et Mexique. Ils s’étendent sur 16?% du monde habité et, bien qu’ils ne rassemblent que 7 % de la population, leurs économies combinées représentent 24?% de la richesse mondiale. En retour, l’accélération de la mondialisation métamorphose les territoires de l’Amérique du Nord. Le présent ouvrage dresse un portrait actualisé de la géographie humaine et de l’économie politique de l’environnement des trois pays, appréhendés comme un ensemble articulé dans le cadre de l’accord de libre-échange qui les unit depuis 1994. Dès la conquête coloniale, l’Amérique du Nord s’inscrit dans une économie de marché mondialisée obsédée par la recherche du profit. Un capitalisme dominant fait et défait les fortunes régionales et déplace les populations en exploitant sans ménagement hommes et ressources. Forte de sa puissance économique, la domination américaine s’est projetée sur la planète entière dans le courant du XXe siècle pour produire la globalisation et les crises écologique et sociale qui sévissent aujourd’hui.
