Abstract
The culture of gaming that pervaded eighteenth-century English society provided many opportunities for the rising middle classes. Not content with enjoying card play in many settings, the middling sort were quick to recognize and exploit the potential for profit in the fast-expanding leisure industry. This paper explores the formalization of card games, the rich material culture of card play, the advent of Assembly Rooms as new social spaces, and the growth of resort towns, all serving as case studies in the commercialization of England's leisure culture.
