Abstract
Anthony Kronman views, with regret, the last quarter century of American legal education and practice because, in his view, this period marks the ultimate demise of the lawyer-statesman as the personification of a set of values that gave purpose and meaning to the work of lawyers. For him, the lawyer-statesman embodies both practical wisdom and civic-mindedness, the principal virtues required for excellence in lawyering. Kronman argues that the collapse of the lawyer-statesman ideal has left the legal profession adrift and created a collective identity crisis for lawyers.'
