Abstract
High magnitude magnetic field pulses, produced by coils external to the body, have been used since the mid 1980s to stimulate motor neurons in the brain cortex and peripheral nerves for diagnostic purposes. An analysis of induced electric fields and their spatial derivatives in a tissue model resulting from current pulses flowing through coils of various shapes and orientations with respect to the tissue is presented. Results have indicated that the best performance is obtained for triangular coils. Advantages of quadruple coils, either triangular or square, are also shown.
