Tilted-beam superstrate antenna with low-profile and high-gain

Abstract
A tilted beam superstrate antenna with low-profile and high-gain is presented. It comprises of a square microstrip patch antenna and an artificial impedance surface - partially reflective surface (AIS-PRS) based superstrate layer. An array of square loop and an array of metallic grids on either sides of a dielectric laminate form the AIS-PRS based superstrate layer. Gradating the mesh grid array creates a reflection phase variation over the superstrate layer, resulting a phase delay of the radiated field which forms a tilted radiation beam. The antenna displays a maximum beam tilt of 27° in the Eplane with a 3dB gain bandwidth of 3%. In addition, the proposed design provides a gain enhancement up to 7dB while maintaining a low cavity height of λ/4.
