Abstract
This article discusses how utilities are struggling to adapt to new regulations that require the neutralization of chlorine at the time of discharge. Both the US Environmental Protection Agency's Clean Water Act standards and the Canadian Environmental Protection Act guidelines state that water to be discharged into both freshwater and marine waters must contain less than 0.02 mg/L chlorine, less than 2% of the usual chlorine concentration in potable water in most distribution systems. Proper dechlorination before discharging water is critical in preventing irreversible environmental damage. The article focuses on the difficulties of dechlorination, equipment and chemicals used for dechlorination, and how to choose the best method for your needs.
