Abstract
Le récit est une arme pour combattre le chiffre, pour redonner de la chair aux mots et aux gens. Pour autant, quel type d’attention voulons-nous poser ? Par les variations de sens, par le soulèvement des émotions, la narration exerce sur la pensée une force réflexive : un trait interprétatif, une préhension singulière, une posture sociale. Sa qualité sensible forme une modalité transmissible : une ambiance au travail, des bruits et des échos sur « les cheffes », des sentiments de crainte, des flashs sur les relations d’assujettissement. Une sociologie publique est à ce prix : faire passer un sens accessible à tous. Dans le récit qui suit, je me suis attaché aux récits de trois jeunes filles en stage dans un supermarché du nord de Paris. Comment entrer « dans la place » ? En usant du « je », comme si nous étions à l’intérieur, nous nous heurtons aux clients, à leurs paniers ; aux caddies, à leurs achats ; au travail domestique, au nettoyage ; aux landaus des mères, aux promenades dans les rayons. Dans les coulisses, sans une parole ni un regard, les caissières se reposent et se surveillent. Énervement, fatigue, insulte, affolement, tandis que déjà la terrifiante voix de la cheffe hurle « aux caisses ».
