Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

For a quarter of a century, from 1891 to 1915, Godfrey Rivers dominated cultural life in Queensland, as an artist, teacher, art advocate, founder and pioneer curator of the state gallery. Later from the 1930s, the Godfrey Rivers Trust established in his memory, transformed the gallery's collection with daring examples of modernism. Now Rivers is remembered more for his masterwork Under the jacaranda ‒ arguably the gallery's most popular painting ‒ than for his other achievements. Sadly, over the years there has been little original research into Rivers; even his entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, written in the 1980s before the days of Trove and other online searching, has errors. Some of his key works have been lost or 'deaccessioned' and he has never been accorded a retrospective exhibition. This article takes a closer look at this important but neglected artist, focusing on his public work for art in Queensland.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
