Cet essai se réfère à la première édition de la première œuvre d’Alice Munro, Dance of the Happy Shades, pour proposer une lecture critique fondée sur l’examen des tensions entre le péritexte et le texte. L’argument consiste à démontrer que le péritexte fonctionne sur le même principe de contrôle patriarcal que celui qui est dénoncé dans le texte, en particulier dans la nouvelle intitulée "The Office."
