Abstract
Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and Gabrielle Roy's Windflower (La Riviere sans repos) are both two fictional works that explore many dimensions of marginality. Although the two works show two protagonists of different ethnicities, African and Eskimo, their fates are subjected to and shaped by circumstances similar in many respects. In this paper, The Bluest Eye shows the African-American community in Ohio, America, inundated by external conditions and ideology constructed by the central, American culture there. Windflower is the story of an Eskimo mother, who becomes alienated both from her own culture of the Canadian North and that of the white South because of her love for her child. The protagonists of both, Pecola and Elsa, are victims of circumstances, especially as produced by an overwhelmingly dominant alien culture and its values. Both the works show a protest against the threats of cultural assimilation and dissemination in their own ways.
