Abstract
In the early 1970's, governments in Britain, Canada and Australia (and many European countries) set up national organisations to promote community involvement in sport and recreation. The aim was universally, to improve the health and well being of the nation(s) through purposeful, physical activity. In each case they established publicity and public relations programmes to stimulate interest and to convey encouraging messages about health and wellbeing. In Britain this was the Sport For All programme, in Canada, Participaction and Australia had the highly successful Life. Be in It campaign. In New Zealand Come Alive was launched by the New Zealand Council for Recreation and Sport (NCRS).
