Abstract
À partir d’enquêtes menées au cours de la dernière décennie, cet article se propose de montrer que l’action de l’État a, au Brésil, des conséquences auxquelles on ne saurait donner un seul sens, mais qui ont en commun de ne pouvoir être comprises qu’en tenant compte de l’historicité du social. On verra ainsi que la loi peut, selon les situations, être un horizon lointain ou un cadre qui permet des identifications et délimite des frontières sociales. On saisira alors la difficulté, dans le cas du Brésil, à parler en généralité d’un État en processus d’informalisation ou, à l’inverse, d’un État acteur d’une meilleure protection juridique des individus.
