The paper analyzes the evolution of vertical integration during the product life cycle. It is shown that increases in demand increase the incentives for vertical integration, while increases in competition reduce them. Next, the paper analyzes the interaction between demand growth and changes in the level of concentration. It is shown that if the decline in competition precedes the decline in demand, vertical integration is increasing when the industry goes from the growth phase to the decline phase. When, however, the decline in demand precedes the decline in competition, vertical integration is decreasing when the industry goes from the growth to the decline phase. In all cases, the direction of change of vertical integration at the beginning of the growth phase and the end of the decline phase is ambiguous.
