MRI properties of polyvinyl alcohol cryogel, potential material for neonatal brain phantoms

Abstract
The use of human subjects for testing new MRI techniques is not appropriate for neonatal population. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential of Polyvinyl Alcohol Cryogel (PVA-C), solid gel that possesses excellent mechanical integrity, as a phantom material for mimicking MRI properties of neonatal brain. The proton T1, T2 relaxation times and Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) were measured in 6-15 % by weight PVA-C (94-85% water content) samples at 2 Tesla. Obtained values confirm the potential use of PVA-C as a phantom material for mimicking high water content physiological tissue such as neonatal brain.
