Abstract
This chapter covers the decline of the British official film as television became increasingly important in what was British South-East Asia. The chapter shows how authoritarian regimes in Malaya and Singapore relied on British, Australian and Canadian broadcasting expertise to erect state-controlled broadcasting systems, and how those evolved. The chapter also covers the formation of the television system in colonial Hong Kong, and the relation of the colonial government to that system. Finally, the chapter explores how British and Commonwealth broadcasters and officials came to be at odds with newly-decolonised states, including those of South-East Asia, which sought to establish authoritarian control of television.
