À partir d’une recherche exploratoire menée dans un quartier mixte de Montréal, auprès d’adolescentes et d’adolescents, de membres du personnel scolaire, de parents et enfin d’intervenantes et intervenants sociaux, l’auteure cherche à cerner la complexité des paramètres et des enjeux qui définissent, du point de vue des participantes et participants, les relations interethniques et interraciales dans le quartier. La dynamique de groupe et la peur du rejet freinent, chez les jeunes, le désir de l’autre, tandis que chez les adultes, les défis consistent à développer l’interculturel dans une situation où minorités et majorité sont insécurisées dans leur identité même, à définir une approche égalitaire à la différence, et enfin à combattre la discrimination liée à la pauvreté, à l’ethnie et à la race ainsi que son utilisation politique. L’article conclut sur une analyse de la conception de l’intégrité individuelle et collective chez les répondantes et répondants.
