Ripercorrendo l'opera brancatiana da Singolare avventura di viaggio a Paolo il caldo, si esamina la tematica della noia nel suo significato sia letterario che esistenziale, evidenziando come sia il discorso politico (la giovanile infatuazione per il fascismo e il successivo passaggio all'antifascismo) come quello stilistico (l'indole e la pratica diaristica) siano strettamente connesse in Brancati — in un implicito dialogo con Leopardi e Baudelaire — all'esperienza e alla coscienza della noia, simboleggiata da alcune immagini fondamentali dell'universo dello scrittore siciliano (la torre, la luce). Emerge così, insieme alla natura ossimorica del motivo, l'assoluta centralità della riflessione sulla noia in Brancati, vero e proprio nucleo sia esistenziale che poetico attorno al quale ruota l'intera sua opera, che in questa prospettiva andrebbe attentamente e approfonditamente riletta.
