Abstract
L’articolo interpreta un aspetto della poetica manzoniana, cioè la polemica con l’Illuminismo, corrente di pensiero da cui l’autore deriva parte della sua stessa formazione intellettuale, soprattutto il rigore logico-razionalistico. Nell’articolo si studia la polemica con la filosofia settecentesca attraverso la scelta di tre concetti in particolare, l’opinione, il pubblico e la posterità, nei quali Manzoni vede il pericolo di scadere dalla tensione dialettica razionale all’ideologia del razionalismo astratto. L’articolo analizza la discussione dei suddetti concetti in Storia della colonna infame e conclude portando in luce le somiglianze e le divergenze fra quest’opera e le Osservazioni sulla tortura di Verri.
