Les linguistes s’intéressent généralement à la variation géographique des langues sous l’angle de la production des locuteurs, par l’étude des pratiques linguistiques qui caractérisent telle ou telle région. Pour sa part, la dialectologie perceptuelle prend en considération les valeurs sociales dont ces pratiques sont investies et elle cartographie les frontières subjectives que les locuteurs établissent entre leurs pratiques et celles des autres, permettant ainsi de jeter un éclairage nouveau sur les liens entre la langue et l’espace. Nous nous proposons de réfléchir à l’intérêt de l’approche perceptuelle pour l’étude des variétés régionales au Québec en prenant appui sur une étude de cas réalisée auprès d’une quarantaine de Sherbrookois. L’étude fait la lumière non seulement sur la capacité des participants à identifier des accents régionaux, mais aussi sur certaines de leurs représentations en matière de variation régionale au Québec.
