O Mosteiro de Arouca tornou-se, especialmente após o primeiro quartel do século XIII, sob benefício de D. Mafalda, uma das mais importantes instituições cistercianas femininas em Portugal. Destacando-se como uma instituição religiosa abastada e de prestígio, a música desempenhou um papel fundamental na liturgia do mosteiro. Os livros de música despertaram, desde há muito tempo, a atenção de vários musicólogos nacionais e internacionais, um interesse reafirmado e legitimizado após a descoberta de Manuel Pedro Ferreira, em 1992, da obra polifónica mais antiga conhecida até hoje em Portugal, um hino a São Bernardo. O livro de coro descoberto por Dom Mauro Fábregas, em 1947, representa o único da colecção do convento que contém apenas repertório polifónico, de compositores ibéricos dos séculos XVI e XVII. Um dos Magnificats de Morales, vários Aleluias, compostos por Manuel Mendes, Francisco Velez, Simão dos Anjos e João Leite de Azevedo, e ainda a missa paródia sobre a canção «O gram senhora», composta pelo misterioso «Brasil» destacam-se entre as obras deste livro. O conjunto de marginália apresenta notas para a execução instrumental, enriquecendo este livro à luz das práticas instrumentais no contexto do convento de Arouca. Embora já tenha sido parcialmente estudado, o códice polifónico de Arouca é agora pela primeira vez objecto de uma investigação de fundo e de transcrição na totalidade, uma contribuição relevante para o estudo da prática da polifonia sacra no século XVII em Portugal.
