Abstract
Cet article présente les résultats d’une recherche exploratoire de type qualitatif sur le sens du recours aux médecines alternatives (chiropractie, acupuncture, homéopathie, hypnothérapie, ostéopathie, etc.) chez des usagers et usagères de Montréal. On apprend que le recours à ces autres médecines exprime plus qu’une volonté de guérir une maladie pour laquelle la médecine ne peut plus rien, signifie autre chose qu’une demande de service. Il est l’expression d’une quête de bien-être qui porte en elle un besoin de donner sens à la maladie et à la vie. Les motifs du recours aux médecines alternatives répondent donc moins à une logique d’efficacité thérapeutique qu’à un besoin d’attention, d’écoute, de compréhension, et à une recherche de sens, à un besoin à la fois de croire et de comprendre ce qui arrive.
