Abstract
Embora até o final do século XX, intervenções militares e golpes de Estado tenham sido uma constante na política latino-americana, nas últimas décadas a região passou por um processo de consolidação democrática sem precedentes. Neste trabalho, analisamos as discrepâncias existentes entre o avanço histórico da democracia na América Latina e as condições que a literatura predominante algumas décadas atrás identificava como necessárias para alcançar esse quadro. A democracia como sistema político se consolidou na região sem que se tenham cumprido as condições consideradas necessárias a respeito das relações civil-militares. A ameaça autoritária não diminuiu por uma mudança drástica de comportamento dentro das Forças Armadas - o elemento-chave da teoria da consolidação democrática. Foi a redução drástica do poder e da influência da direita política e civil com tendências autoritárias que permitiu a estabilidade alcançada.
