Abstract
Les cartes à jouer dotées de scènes de genre entrent dans la catégorie de l'imagerie populaire. Elles n'ont jamais fait l'objet d'une investigation de type historique dans le domaine du sport en dépit des nombreuses saynètes exhibant des pratiques d'exercices physiques. Ce type de représentations s'apparente pourtant à un miroir original que la société tend à elle-même et constitue donc une source originale qui mérite considération. Parmi les jeux de cartes, le « Tarot Nouveau » est intéressant à étudier. Héritier des tarots à sujets allégoriques du XV e siècle, le Tarot du cartier français Grimaud s'impose à la fin du XIX e siècle. Ses saynètes sont restées quasi inchangées depuis. Postulant une fonction de régulation sociale jouée par cette forme d'imagerie, cette étude sémio-historique montre que le Tarot Nouveau restitue un ordre bourgeois et civilisé hésitant entre modernité et tradition. Ces bambochades sportives sont révélatrices de cette période « fin de siècle », empreinte de vigueur républicaine et d'esprit d'entreprise, ambivalente face à un progrès multiforme, conduisant à vouloir entretenir un lien avec la société d'antan.
