Abstract
Although the peacekeeping task in Cyprus had been taken over by Unficyp, this did not mean that the Force was complete. Essentially (as indicated above) it was for a while a British-Canadian affair, with Lieutenant-General Gyani, of India, at its head, and Major-General Carver, of Britain, as Deputy Commander.1 But, with the United States providing and paying for such airlift as proved necessary,2 the Swedish contingent arrived in mid-April, the Irish a week later, and the Finns by the end of the month. At that time Canada, Finland, and Sweden were each contributing about 1,000 men; Ireland in the region of 600; and Britain the balance of roughly 2,750 (which included the Force’s small air component).
