Représentation d’un groupe d’élèves, la photo de classe est devenue depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle un “rituel scolaire”, une tradition et un usage qui mérite d’être étudié. Point aveugle de la recherche, source à l’interface de l’institution scolaire, des enseignants, des élèves et des parents, nous avons fait l’hypothèse que la photo de classe n’était pas seulement un témoin culturel mais un outil pour la compréhension des usages et des pratiques scolaires.Notre objectif est, en nous basant sur le corpus abondant des photos de classe du XIXe siècle à nos jours, d’utiliser l’analyse historique de la photo de classe non pas comme une illustration d’un contexte mais comme un élément de compréhension même de l’histoire de l’école Pour préciser notre réflexion nous proposons trois axes. Le premier nous amène à définir cet objet singulier qu’est la photo de classe. Dans un second temps nous nous attacherons à établir les contours juridique et symbolique de ce rituel scolaire fortement codifié depuis 1927. Dans un troisième temps nous nous interrogerons sur l’analyse même de cette photo pour comprendre si au-delà de la mise en scène photographique, l’institution scolaire a fait de la photo de classe un reflet voire un modèle de l’école.
