Depuis 2002, dans le cadre de plusieurs programmes à l’Université du Québec à Montréal, se pratique le jumelage interculturel ; il s’agit de rencontres entre Québécois francophones et immigrants dont la langue maternelle n’est pas le français. Dans cet article, après avoir présenté le caractère distinct de l’activité ainsi que les objectifs généraux, un exemple de scénario pédagogique sera explicité. En somme, le jumelage interculturel se démarque dans le paysage de la pédagogie des échanges interculturels. Il ne vise pas uniquement l’apprentissage d’une langue seconde ou l’approfondissement des connaissances culturelles ; il implique une réciprocité des échanges, un enrichissement mutuel, avec des acteurs que l’on nomme jumeaux/jumelles parce que leurs rencontres s’ouvrent sur la diversité culturelle et visent plus largement la formation d’une communauté universitaire multiculturelle. De plus, le jumelage s’adresse autant aux apprenants de langue qu’aux futurs professionnels, ce qui contribue à sensibiliser la société en général à la réalité multiculturelle de Montréal.
